No - it was just a joke.

The strength checker gives you a general idea of how to make your passwords stronger but brute force technology (among others) is getting stronger and faster all the time. A password that might have taken a week to crack last month might take an hour to crack this month for example.

No - nor does this website make any guarantees. While you may be less susceptible to brute force attacks, hackers could potentially use social engineering or hacking techniques to get your password.

The UK government suggest using 3 unique words to make your password strong along with numbers, capital letters and special characters - www.cyberaware.gov.uk/passwords

By day I am a teacher of Computer Science in West Yorkshire, UK and I see many students using password checking websites when we talk about password security. Once they have inputted their password I generally ask them "How do you know that website hasn't just stolen your password?". This site is a continuation of that joke but hopefully it will actually teach them not to input their password into random websites!

This site was put together by Matt Helliwell but uses code from www.howsecureismypassword.net and available via Github.
